For its strength, coherence and tackling an issue that it’s usually seen through a masculine point of view, and that here is given through a feminine gaze, showing how miner’s wives are also made of strength and struggle, the jury decided to give a special mention to the film PUTA MINA by the PUTA MINA collective.

Decidimos atribuir o Prémio de Melhor Curta-Metragem do Olhares do Mediterrâneo 2019, ao filme que nos atingiu como um murro no estômago. Acertou-nos em cheio a cinematografia cuidada, a pungente interpretação da protagonista e sobretudo a história surpreendente feita de coragem e determinação. Marcou-nos a luta desigual de uma mulher lutadora contra as convenções sociais numa cultura fechada e discriminatória. E tudo isto, sem perder de vista uma mensagem relevante: apesar de todas as adversidades, com força interior, é possível escapar a um futuro predeterminado e tomar nas nossas mãos o próprio destino.
We decided to award the 2019 Best Mediterranean Short Film Award to the movie that hit us like a punch in the stomach. The careful cinematography, the poignant interpretation of the protagonist, and above all the surprising story made of courage and determination, hit us hard. It marked the unequal struggle of a woman fighting against social conventions in a closed and discriminatory culture. And all this, without losing sight of a relevant message: despite all adversity, with inner strength, it is possible to escape a predetermined future and take our own destiny into our hands.

O júri atribuiu o Prémio Travessias ao filme Strange Fish de Giulia
Bertoluzzi, pela forma tocante e de grande sensibilidade como exalta os
valores da generosidade, solidariedade e dignidade humanas através da
atuação de pescadores de uma cidade costeira na Tunísia no resgate de
emigrantes no Mediterrâneo. Particularmente marcante é a forma como o
filme nos mostra o lidar quotidiano com as consequências dramáticas
destes inúmeros naufrágios.
The jury awarded the Crossings Award to Giulia Bertoluzzi’s Strange Fish, for the touching and highly sensitive way it magnifies the values of human generosity, solidarity and dignity of the work of fishermen from a coastal city in Tunisia in the rescue of migrants in the Mediterranean. Particularly striking is the way the film shows us their everyday concerns with the dramatic human consequences of the countless shipwrecks that have already taken place.

Excelente documentário; muito intimista, revelador de aspectos que só a condição da realizadora (como mulher e filha) poderia permitir. Um filme sobre a condição de ser mulher em Marrocos, que nos mostra aspectos sociais correntes que nos remetem para diferentes formas de dominação, mas que ainda assim é capaz de resgatar, numa resignação (não) silenciada, o humor e a sensibilidade que permitem a muitas mulheres a sua sobrevivência.
Uma história pessoal, um retrato de família feito com coragem e sem concessões num registo observacional que nos traz igualmente a voz da sua mãe e avó em declarações de muita força para um pai ‘tirano’.
An excellent documentary; very intimate, revealing aspects that only the condition of the director (as woman and daughter) could allow. A film about the condition of being a woman in Morocco, which shows us current social aspects that lead us to different forms of domination. However, it is capable of rescuing, in a (non) silenced resignation, the humour and the sensitivity that allows many women to survive.
A personal story, a courageous and uncompromising family portrait in an observational record that also brings us the voice of his mother and grandmother in very strong statements to a “tyrant” father.

Um muito bom trabalho de actrizes. Boa cinematografia e um bom ritmo para uma curta metragem. Uma estória muito bem contada que permite ao espectador entrar no universo “fechado e inescapável” daquelas duas personagens incapazes de mudar as suas vidas. Mãe e filha lutam entre si, por nada e sem nada, num drama de angústias e de incompreensões pelo que lhes acontece. Notável a forma como a realizadora em 13 minutos nos faz ‘entrar nas ‘vidas psíquicas e materiais’ destas duas mulheres.
A very good performance of the two actresses. Good cinematography and a good pace for a short film. A beautifully told story that allows the viewer to enter the “closed and inescapable” universe of those two characters unable to change their lives. Mother and daughter fight for nothing and with nothing in a drama of anguishes and misunderstandings for what happens to them. Noteworthy the way the director in 13 minutes gets us into the “psychic and material lives” of these two women.

O Júri Começar a Olhar gostaria de atribuir uma menção honrosa a um filme que pela sua originalidade formal nos dá a conhecer de forma sensível uma dimensão mais íntima dos refugiados e que habitualmente não é conhecida. Gostaríamos assim de destacar o trabalho de imagem e som do filme Shadow da realizadora síria Zeina Qahwaji.
The Jury Começar a Olhar gives an honourable mention to a film that by its formal originality makes one aware of a more intimate dimension of the refugees and one which is not usually known. We would like to point out the image and sound work of this film, Shadow, by Syrian director Zeina Qahwaji.
