TEN YEARS OF LOOKING AT THE WORLD
FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN SHORES

This year, Olhares do Mediterrâneo – Women’s Film Festival celebrates its 10th edition. In 2014, when we organised the first edition, inspired by the Films Femmes Méditerranée festival in Marseille, we couldn’t have imagined that we would get here. The idea was to produce a single event. But the enthusiastic response from the public showed that this was an area that deserved a place in the cultural panorama of Lisbon and Portugal, and that we couldn’t stop. We did not stop and, since then, we kept pursuing the Festival’s dual mission of giving visibility to the work of women filmmakers from Mediterranean countries and debating socially impactful issues.
We like to think of Olhares do Mediterrâneo – Women’s Film Festival as a “festival of intervention”: we believe that festivals can harness the power of cinema to open a window to the world and be factors
for social change.
Over nine years, we have presented 377 films (fiction, documentary, animation and experimental cinema) by 403 female directors, offering around 25,000 spectators – including more than 10,000 students from all levels of education – a chance to see film works that seldom enter the commercial
circuit. We have organised dozens of debates, exhibitions, workshops, masterclasses and courses for children, general public and teachers. We have organised extensions of the Festival in Portugal and abroad, founded a Mediterranean network of women’s film festivals and served as a meeting point
for exchange of ideas and experiences for dozens of filmmakers, producers and distributors.

The Festival’s programme has always been guided by the desire to honour geographical representation and show a variety of styles, interests and themes of the cinematographic work of Mediterranean women. With this in mind, for the 10th edition we have selected 57 films from 22 countries. Some of the films programmed this year deal with the presence of women in the public sphere – exploring
dimensions as diverse as gypsy feminist activism or religious radicalisation; other films deal with the challenges of memory, with gender identity and with family ties; others, on the other hand, deal with everyday issues such as access to housing or caring for children and the elderly. We have broadened
the scope of the Travessias special section to cover the contemporary manifestations and persistence of colonialism and racism on which it is based: its oppressive effects and forms of resistance it triggers.
As during the previous editions, film screenings will be happening alongside a wide range of parallel activities programmed for people of different ages and interests including debates, exhibitions, music events, workshops and books stands. A novelty this year will be an industry programme offering a film
writing course, a masterclass and a debate on programming films made by women filmmakers.
With this 10th edition we celebrate the Festival’s journey, with eyes on the future. We want to continue to be a port of refuge and departure, where Mediterranean women who make and promote cinema get to know each other, exchange experiences and meet a diverse and curious audience.
