Renata vive numa pequena cidade do interior onde o tempo parece ter parado e a vida segue o ritmo das actividades rurais. Durante o Verão, Renata tem a sua primeira menstruação. Uma sensação de desconforto surge nela quando se apercebe das antigas crenças populares sobre a menstruação que influenciam a vida das mulheres do lugar.
Renata lives in a small country town where time seems to have stopped and life follows the rhythm of rural activities. During the summer Renata gets her first period. A sense of upset arises within her when she realises the ancient folk beliefs around menstruation that influence the lives of women of the place.

Director’s Note
I grew up in a small countryside town where popular beliefs about the menstrual cycle have always existed and still do. Especially in the rituals of certain moments in rural life, there is a widespread belief that women possess a destructive and impure force when they have their period, when they have ‘chello ‘ncuollo’. ‘Chello ‘ncuollo’ is a dialect expression used to refer to the menstrual cycle without naming it. It literally means ‘that thing on you,’ as if menstruation were a negative presence looming over the body. What cannot be ‘said’ is feared. And indeed, when you have your period, you have the power to make plants wither and meat rot, to spoil tomato sauce just by touching it. (You can find the full director’s statement on the press kit)
