Biserka Šuran
The Netherlands , Croatia · Doc. · 2022 · 46’

The author of the film takes her father on a trip down memory lane in which she revives scenes from their country of birth, former Yugoslavia. Memories are reflected in cinematic decor sets in which they converse about nationality, identity, love, dreams and regrets.

Directors’ Note
I grew up in The Netherlands but spend all my summers on the Croatian coast and at the farm of my grandparents. As a child I have always felt that our time in Amsterdam was just an in-between-time before we would go back to Croatia. But as it turns out, we never went “back” and therefore we always stayed in the in-between. This in-between state of being is reflected in the film; the old factory, the train that doesn’t come, the car that doesn’t actually drive, the bitter-sweet restaurant, the lonely hotel-room. My father and I make the travel, we try to go “back” but we can’t, we simply cannot turn back time. And therefor the only thing we can do is talk and try to understand each other, try to find a place for this loss that is sometimes so big and overwhelming.
