When Noemí left Escarigo in the 1960s in pursuit of a better life, the streets were filled with life and joy. Now, the silence reigns in this rural Portuguese village. We follow Noemí on a journey back to her home village which she barely recognises. With the help of few residents left and longtime friends, Noemí dives into her past while trying to overcome the loss of the loved ones.

Director’s Note
Despite being few the personal recollections the director has of Escarigo, many were the stories that Mariana heard about her grandparents’ hometown. When, after many years, she returned to Escarigo to bury her grandfather’s ashes, she was faced with an immense loneliness: the streets in her family’s accounts did not match the ones she saw. The memories of a happy and busy past shared by the few resident left, awakened in Mariana the desire to explore the rural depopulation phenomenon. What began as a project about Escarigo quickly became an open letter from her grandmother, Noemí, to the village that saw her grow and to the husband who always accompanied her. The Colours of Grief portrays a journey back to the origins, marked by the impermanence of time and the unreliability of the memories that seem to trick the mind of those who saw themselves forced to leave the land they loved.
