Northwestern Liberia. The girls of the most important “bush school” in the area. In 11 of the 15 counties of Liberia the secret societies are widespread: called Poro for men, and Sande for women, they regulate every aspect of the community life and are considered the custodians of traditional culture. To become a member it is necessary to attend the “bush school” for periods ranging from one month to three years, during which the girls learn the respect for the elderly, their duties of future wives and mothers, traditional songs and dances. The Sande schools are run by women named Zoe, who enjoy the highest prestige in the communities. They practice genital mutilation on the newcomers. The cutting of the clitoris is the rite of initiation into the Sande society: according to the local believes, it makes the girls pure and ready to become real women. In Liberia, female genital mutilation is legal and the “bush schools” receive regular licenses from the Ministry of the Interior. >< Liberia nord-occidentale. In 11 delle 15 contee della Liberia sono diffuse delle società segrete dette Poro, per gli uomini, e Sande, per le donne, che regolano ogni aspetto sociale e sono considerate custodi della cultura tradizionale. Per diventarne membri è necessario frequentare le “scuola nella foresta”, per periodi che variano da un mese a tre anni, durante i quali le ragazze apprendono il rispetto degli anziani, le mansioni di future mogli e madri, i canti e le danze tradizionali. Le scuole Sande sono gestite da donne dette Zoe, che godono del massimo prestigio nelle comunità: sono loro a eseguire la mutilazione genitale sulle nuove arrivate. Il taglio del clitoride è il rito d’iniziazione alla società Sande che, secondo la credenza locale, rende le novizie pure e pronte a diventare donne. A Sande é considerada a guardiã da tradição e cultura dos antepassados, e por isso é intocável. Dando voz a três activistas liberianas pelos direitos das mulheres, este filme acompanha o seu dorido e veemente grito. 

Female genital mutilation is legal in Liberia. It is seen as an initiation into a secret society of women known as Sande that is practiced in 11 of the 15 counties of the country. Sande is considered the guardian of the tradition and culture of the ancestors, and therefore it is untouchable. Giving voice to three Liberian activists for women’s rights, this film joins their painful and passionate outcry.

My trip to Liberia to make this film was gloomy, tense, marked by resistances, silences, threats. It was painful to see how much the issue of female genital mutilation, which in almost all of Africa is publicly discussed and opposed after decades of feminist battles, in Liberia is still covered by a veil of reticence. With this film, I want to give voice to Liberian women who are bravely strug- gling to build a new future. And they need a strong international support in order to push their government to change course.
