Nota da Realizadora Director’s Statement
Since 2012 I have lost many things starting with the life I used to have and many friends, ending with relatives and families. Also, as a filmmaker as I have witnessed all the combats from the fight against ISIS until the Turkish occupation of Serekaniye, my city.  Watching Russia, the US and the Syrian regime on the streets of our cities and taking no action against this occupation, I believe it would be of great importance for me and my people as a female Kurdish filmmaker to narrate the story of hundreds of thousands of Kurds through the story of a simple life event, such as a wedding, which will act as the manifestation of people’s struggles on this small piece of a huge conflicts.  Rojava now is facing a huge occupation by Türkiye, the second biggest army in NATO, and all the people of Serekaniye, including our three female characters are forced to move from Serekaniye. This occupation will again put the people of Rojava including these families under the threat of massive displacement. The brides’ destiny is blurry, taken away as they have been from their place, where their families were in a city that resembles them in language, traditions and costumes.  The situation in Rojava is one of its own kind, it’s a mini-second world war. On this little territory, Rojava, one is able to see all the sophisticated armies of the world in its streets. Despite the ongoing murdering and death of people of Rojava on a daily basis, those armies only do their requested tasks and close their eyes to the death of people. It is one of the world wonders that the US military and the Russian military are in the same cities, crossing each other in this small area in the world. However, even when both those incompatible powers meet on a point in this land, they do not meet to protect its people rather they are here to protect their own interests. On the other hand, the story of the three women that I was inspired from are real stories that happened in Rojava. They are my friends and their families, somehow I thought that as a filmmaker I can be the person who can tell these stories. They represent all what the society went through and the contradictions of our simple society itself. While we were facing a war we couldn’t break away from our social and religious rules about women. At the same time, we show women like Gule who take action and decisions changing the life that she used to live and accept. We try to tell the story of a big war through the small stories of three women. I try to talk about the suffering and how life continues during this bad time. In every circumstances the human being must survive.  It is of great significance to share the stories of this land through the families that were witness and also took part in all the changes that happened here, and by on one hand show the humanitarian situation of the Kurdish people who live now in camps and schools, and by on the other hand. Therefore, I ,as a Kurdish woman who has spent all her life here, will always support and be part of the ongoing work of the Autonomous-Administration which supported and gave women the privilege of everything in Rojava. Unfortunately, I have experienced displacement and was forced to flee from my house twice, leaving everything behind. The three characters, as I told below, were inspired by my friends and families, somehow I thought that as a filmmaker I owe them to tell their stories to the world.

Anaklia is a short documentary made during the film residency organized by Caucasus Cinema in the Republic of Georgia in May 2022. The last stop of the residency, Anaklia, immediately exerted a strong fascination on me. Wandering in the emptiness of its streets, listening to the song of the wind that infiltrates its infrastructure, observing the dark rooms of its empty hotels, I immediately thought the place itself should be the protagonist of the film. Anaklia, created by man, is a city without men, dominated by skeletal buildings and, at night, by the street dogs and cows that seem to rebel against their confinement outside the city, grazing on the little grass that remains between the luxury hotels and the neon-lit palm trees.

Nota da Realizadora Director’s Statement
In my teenage, I used to always find myself isolated and not able to be part of any activity. I was constantly being bullied by my friends and teachers. Which broke me down at every turn. What has devastated me the most is that I trusted them and that’s how they treated me Hence, I asked myself why I am incapable to integrate and be part of who surrounds me like my other friends.  One of these days, at school, when I was 15 my classmates laughed in class at a story they shared with one another. I was the only one there who neither laughed nor reacted. That’s where I questioned Myself why I didn’t laugh as well. Am I stupid? Then, I suddenly realized that I couldn’t hear a word from the told story.  On that day I came back home and told my mother about the urge to go to an audiologist to check my hearing. The doctor, my parents, and I were surprised to find out that I suffer from significant hearing impairment. That’s when I figured out that I am diagnosed with Harboyan syndrome, a disorder affecting vision and hearing, both progressively deteriorating with age.  However, I didn’t lose hope… I completed my education and obtained a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and a master’s degree in visual and communication arts.  Two years ago, when my vision started gradually declining I had a strong desire to direct this film because my aims are to reach Social advocates, Governments, NGOs, parents, and even children and schools.  The chosen audience can play a key role in raising awareness, removing barriers, and promoting social inclusion for people with disability. The disability that is getting in the way of them fulfilling their simple or wildest dreams, or simply enjoying their lives.  And to raise awareness about taking the same importance that partial disabilities are also disabilities like total disabilities. Because people with impairments face different problems and fight every day to become part of their surroundings.

Nota da Realizadora Director’s Statement
When I met Carmen, I was surprised by the amount of prejudice that still exists in Spain towards the Roma community, and how little the reality in which they truly live had been portrayed. Through endless conversations and debates, Carmen and Guru (her comrade-in-arms) immersed us in a racialised feminist struggle where sisterhood with other racialised women pushed them forward. And I soon understood that cinema today is still far behind in feminist issues, compared to what is happening in cities like Cartagena. I think that in this film you can appreciate the feminine point of view from which it has been made. With a team of mostly women, I think we approach feminism in a subtle and not just vindictive way. We explore how racism and machismo always go hand in hand, through the voices and stories of all the women who appear in the film.
