Nesrin trocou Istambul pela casa da família numa aldeia rural da Turquia para terminar o seu primeiro romance, mas quando a sua mãe religiosa e conservadora chega sem avisar, conflitos antigos ressurgem – revelando os cismas que dividem a Turquia moderna e forçando-as a explorar as partes mais sombrias do mundo interior da outra.

Nesrin has left Istanbul for the family’s village house in rural Türkiye to finish her first novel, but when her religious and conservative mother arrives unannounced, old conflicts resurface–revealing the schisms dividing modern Türkiye and forcing them to explore the darker parts of the other’s inner world.

Se as paredes falassem…! Entediada com a sua doméstica e isolada rotina no Sul da Alemanha, Nebile, uma dona de casa turca de meia-idade, passa os dias a tecer fantasias sobre a vida dos outros. Um dia, decide resolver o problema com as próprias mãos e cava um túnel secreto para a casa do vizinho.

If walls could talk… Bored with her domestic and isolated routine in Southern Germany, Nebile, a middle-aged Turkish housewife, spends her days fantasising about the lives of others. One day she decides to take the matter in her own hands, and digs a secret tunnel into the house next-door.

Elif tem 10 anos e a irmã, Ayse, tem 13. É um verão abafado na Istambul dos anos 1980. Elif brinca na rua, encontrando ainda baldios verdes entre os estaleiros de obras. Ayse passa o Verão estendida no sofá. Por razões que Elif não entende, a irmã sente-se irritadíssima com ela. Ayse parece inalcançável.

Elif is 10 years old and her sister Ayse is 13. It’s a sultry summer in the 1980’s Istanbul. Elif plays on the street finding the remaining green areas left between construction sites. Ayse spends the summer lying on the couch. Elif drives her sister mad, for reasons she can’t quite grasp. Ayse seems unreachable.

Two sisters and a brother live in the centre of today’s Istanbul. They are in their thirties and forties, and lead very different lives, self centred on their upper-middle class preoccupations. One day, a phone call brings them together on a voyage through Türkiye’s suburbs and villages to the small town in the Black Sea mountains where they were born. Their aged mother, Nusret, has disappeared…

Ummuye, Behiye, Ummu, Fatma K, Cennet, Saniye, Fatma F, Zeynep e Nesime são nove mulheres que vivem em Arslankoy, uma aldeia montanhosa no Sul da Turquia. Os seus dias são passados a trabalhar no campo, no estaleiro de obras e em casa. Para aliviar a dureza das suas vidas, estas mulheres reúnem-se por uma razão totalmente diferente: pretendem escrever e encenar uma peça baseada nas histórias das suas vidas.

Ummuye, Behiye, Ummu, Fatma K, Cennet, Saniye, Fatma F, Zeynep and Nesime are nine women living in Arslankoy, a mountain village in southern Türkiye. They spend their days working hard in the fields, on the construction site and at home. To lighten the burden of life, these women come together for a completely different reason. They intend to write and perform a play based on their own life stories.

NOTA DA REALIZADORA DIrector’s Note
Those nine women doing theater in their own village would, in any case, write and put on stage a play based on their life stories, whether or not I made this movie. That was the most exciting aspect of this work for me. I wanted to shoot a fiction-like documentary and not a documentary- like fiction film, without trying to be invisible but quietly integrating myself in their lives at that very village, at that very moment and with the very people living through this happening. It has been a very important experience for me to observe the film move on the thin line between a documentary and a fiction film as time passed, whilst the line between their real lives and their play blurred. Our filming crew of three eventually turned out to be a part of their theater team. Working under similar circumstances they created, at the end of five weeks, “the play of their lives”, and I created, at the end of two years, the film “The Play”.

Haunted by a tragic incident, Nihat has isolated himself as the fire warden of an observation tower. At a rural bus station in the region, Seher has taken a job as a hostess. After their paths cross and their pasts are exposed, the pair reluctantly develops an domestic partnership that allows them to rediscover compassion in their lives and work through their personal pain

O que sentes quando vês o mar pela primeira vez? No Bósforo, em Istambul, jovens adolescentes saltam e empurram-se uns aos outros para o mar, independentemente das fortes correntes ou da poluição. Aprendem a nadar nas águas profundas, mergulhando no desconhecido e talvez na própria vida.

When you see the sea for the first time, what do you think? At the Bosphorus in Istanbul boys in their teens jump and push each other into the sea, regardless of the strong currents or the pollution. They learn to swim in deep waters, diving into the unknown and perhaps into life itself.

Decide refugiar-se em casa dos pais, na esperança de que eles tomem conta dela e da bebé. Mas a vida tem outros planos e Amaia dá por si a viver a vida que nunca quis: a da sua mãe trinta anos antes.

Amaia (Laia Costa) has just become a mother. Her partner is away from home for months and she feels overwhelmed, incapable of looking after her baby and going back to her job as a translator. She decides to take refuge in her parents’ home with the hope that they will look after her and her baby in her childhood home, in a lovely coastal village in the Basque Country. But life has other plans, her mother falls ill and it’s Amaia who will have to look after all of them. She finds herself living the life her mother had thirty years before. She becomes a housewife, with an absent partner, caring for a baby and a sick grandmother Family roles are reversed, changing their relationships forever. The daughter becomes everyone’s mother. Amaia, who until now only loved her mother, will start to understand her.

O apoio incondicional que Rubén oferece a Asïr reflete a mais pura das amizades, embora o pior ainda esteja por vir.

Ruben and Asïr, two great friends, meet every afternoon to play soccer in a car scrapyard. One day like any other, Ruben waits for his friend, and discovers with surprise that he has been beaten up. The unconditional support that Rubén offers to Asïr reflects the purest friendship, although the worst is yet to come.
